Tucked in an alley off Columbus Avenue, the bar is officially named Specs' Twelve Adler Museum Cafe.But everyone knows it as just Specs - an authentic saloon where strangers become friends, politics are debated, anarchy is imagined, sorrows are drowned, triumphs are celebrated and poetry is often spouted.
It proved to be the perfect setting Sunday when, post-concert, Outside Lands headliners the Kings of Leon and Phoenix popped in to warm their whistles.
“We decided to put out this four song EP when we realized people were wanting this music.
The true design of these sessions was to have something to show for ourselves.
"I happened upon the place when I moved to the neighborhood in '76, a Harvard dropout turned fledging jazz canary," jazz artist Kitty Margolis said.
"Specs' avuncular presence and cold-blooded humor - and the bar studded with weird objects which included a mummified whale's appendage - were curiously appealing, and it quickly became my 'go-to' hang spot.
